Quilting Practice

About a month ago, I decided to finally bite the bullet and learn how to freemotion quilt.  I mean, I have a quilting sewing machine…I might as well use it to its full potential.  During the holidays, I used this as an excuse to practice.  Here’s how that turned out:

Some of the spots are obviously a little pointy, but I’m slowly getting the hang of it.  Luckily for me, you can’t see the other side of the quilting since it was just some muslin and wasn’t going to be exposed for the scarf.  Yeah, that side didn’t look so good.  Oddly enough, the toughest part was when I stopped, moved my hands away from the piece, and then repositioned them to resume quilting.  Even when I stopped with the needle down, the piece always rotated a bit and created some weird jaggedy kink in the quilting.

I definitely need more practice.

Here’s a closeup:

Well, I think it’s better.  Even though you can see all the inconsistencies and kinks and pointy bits and just about everything imperfect.  Haha…maybe one day I’ll post a picture of my first quilting scraps when my cousin taught me over Thanksgiving.  Then again…maybe not.  I can’t begin to imagine how difficult it will be to quilt something significantly bigger than a measly piece of fabric (which is next–probably my hallway rug/runner).

The scarf was my mom’s Christmas present this year.  The button is a vintage button from Sew Mama Sew.

Wow that’s pretty good. I’m horrible with free motion quilting too. I’m better with just quilting lines with my walking foot. ^_^ I haven’t found a project to free motion with… maybe I’ll tackle it soon… but I highly doubt it.

Good luck! I think this turned out great. I think what makes quilting wonderful is you intake the whole piece not just a close up of it. There is something called the 10 feet rule, if it looks good 10 feet away it’s good. ^_^ It’s mostly for people that are prefectionist that hate none perfect points.
